This has been an exciting year for Central Florida Young Engineers in ASHRAE. During this year, we had the opportunity to present Tech Topic sessions to all of our members. These discussions gave insight to the main speaker’s topic and also served as a networking opportunity. Our young members were able to hear from local industry professionals like Michael Sheerin, Wade Conlan, Firouz Keikavousi, Damon Lynn, Bob Hyttel, Paul Halyard, and Richard King. The topics covered addressed key subjects like Preventive Maintenance, Infection Control, and Sustainability.

The 1st Annual Dodge ball Tournament was held in February. Seven companies from the Central Florida HVAC community participated in this event: Thermal Tech, Inc., Tom Barrow Co., MSI, Harper Limbach, LLC, Peninsula Engineering, Jacobs Engineering, and X-nth. The semi-finalists, Thermal Tech, Inc. and X-nth disputed the title of champion in the final game. X-nth quickly came out on top by eliminating Thermal Tech, Inc in only 1 minute and 34 seconds, the fastest game of the entire day. Congratulations to X-nth (Matt Mikus, JC Le, Matt Hopf, Kim Hopf, Jason Jones, Tom Hoppert, and Tim Hedrick) for winning the 1^st Annual Central Florida ASHRAE – YEA Dodgeball Tournament!

Another great achievement for our chapter is the development of the local Mentorship Program. This program was developed with the objective of creating a professional partnership between a YEA member, whether it be a young engineer, recent graduate, or student and a professional member from our chapter. The experienced professional will provide assistance and resources for the transition from college to the work industry (such as interview preparation, career path guidance, professional development, and much more). Currently, we are in the mentor/mentee matching process and we will be announcing our first participants by the end of this month. Thank you for such a great year and we look forward to seeing you for 2010 – 2011.

Local Mentorship Program Kickoff

I am thrilled to announce that we will begin the recruiting process for this program. The local mentorship program has been developed with the objective of creating a professional partnership between a Young Engineer/recent engineering graduate/engineering student and a professional member of this local chapter. This program will provide assistance and resources for the transition from college to the work industry, interview preparation, career path guidance, general HVAC fundamental courses, professional development, and ASHRAE leadership development. Furthermore, it will give our local young members the opportunity to learn more about this local chapter’s committees and possibly have future involvement within this chapter. This program was an idea that was forged during the YEA Leadership Weekend of May 2009 that I had the privilege of attending. Every member of our chapter can participate in this unique program. If you would like to receive further information on how to be become a mentor or mentee, please send me an email to vicepresident@ashrae-cfl.org stating whether you are an engineering student or a professional local member (seasoned member/young engineer/recent engineering graduate). You will receive a brief survey according to your status within the chapter. Once the survey has been completed, please return it promptly to the email above.

Dodgeball Results

Our first Dodgeball Tournament was held this past weekend and it was a complete success. A total of 45 members from seven different companies of the Central Florida HVAC community participated in this event; the companies that participated in this event were:

Thermal Tech, Inc.
Tom Barrow Co.
MSI
Harper Limbach, LLC
Peninsula Engineering
Jacobs Engineering
X-nth, Inc.

Our tournament consisted of a Round Robin morning session, where the different teams would test their skills in this sport. The morning session was lead by the team from X-nth with a total of 6 wins, followed by Harper Limbach, LLC and Tom Barrow Co. with 5 wins each.

The most memorable games of the morning session were the MSI vs. Peninsula Engineering, X-nth vs. Peninsula Engineering and Tom Barrow Co. vs. Jacobs Engineering.

After a well-earned lunch break, a last minute team consisting of Central Florida ASHRAE All-Stars (Richard King, Jason Alphonso, John Miller, Mason Dillard, John Guerrero and David Hanington) entered the single elimination playoff bracket afternoon session. The afternoon playoff session was a fierce competition, where only the very best at the art of dodging would advance for a chance to claim the title of Dodgeball Champions. All of the games kept the audience at the edge of their seats. Accuracy, speed, and quick thinking were the only tools needed to win every game. Every team performed at their very best, but only two would advance to the final round. The final game that would determine our champion was disputed between Thermal Tech, Inc. and X-nth. At the very end, X-nth came on top by eliminating the opposing Thermal Tech, Inc team in only 1 minute and 34 seconds, the fastest game of the entire day. Congratulations to X-nth (Matt Mikus, JC Le, Matt Hopf, Kim Hopf, Jason Jones, Tom Hoppert, and Tim Hedrick) for winning the 1^st Annual Central Florida ASHRAE – YEA Dodgeball Tournament. To all of the teams who participated in this event – job well done! We are looking forward to your participation in the 2011 Central Florida ASHRAE-YEA Dodgeball Tournament.

Winter Meeting Success

Another great showing for the Central Florida Chapter at the ASHRAE Winter Meeting here in our own back yard! Mr. Bill Dillard led a great team of host committee members and volunteers that helped to make the Winter Meeting a spectacular event. We thank you, Bill, for all your efforts and for helping to pave the way for the next generation of host committee members. I’d also like to thank all of the employers that understand how important it is to give back to ASHRAE. Without your support, this organization would not be where it is today. The Central Florida Chapter recruited over 150 volunteers, volunteers that took time out of their busy lives to help our Chapter and our Society. I’m very humbled and proud to be a part of such an awesome chapter.

Volunteering for the Winter Meeting wasn’t all hard work, though. We had some fun too! Our very own past president, Mike Dillard, organized and emceed a Wii tournament featuring Society’s executive committee. It may be the only time in history that vice presidents punched each other, knocked each other out and had an audience to cheer them on. We also hosted a hurricane party with over 600 attendees! The hurricane was so strong that it actually removed all of the decorations from the room.

Now that the international conference is in the past, it is time to refocus on our chapter. We still have many, many events coming and somehow we even twisted Gordon Holness’s arm to come back to Central Florida and present his presidential message, “Sustaining our Future by Rebuilding Our Past”. We’re honored to have President Holness back in Orlando and look forward to this exciting meeting.

Have you gotten your dodgeball team together? There is nothing better than getting a bunch of engineers, contractors and manufacturers’ reps. together for some good YEA type fun. You can be guaranteed that one team will over analyze everything, another will tell you how they could’ve done it better and the last will tell you why theirs is better than all the others. So grab your balls and get your team together!

Not too long after the Dodgeball Tournament, we will be having our 8th Annual Shrimp Boil. We return to the Winter Park Farmers’ Market on Thursday, March 25th for more shrimp, drinks and good times! More information will be out soon.

YEA Programs 2010

Hello Central Florida ASHRAE members, we have exciting programs for you this coming spring season. So let’s get ready for some fun times and learning opportunities. The local mentorship program has reached completion and we are excited to announce that we will be sending emails to all of our members who would like to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. The objective of this local mentoring program is to provide assistance and resources for the transition from college to the work industry, interview preparation, career path guidance, general HVAC fundamental courses, professional development, ASHRAE Leadership Development, and much more! Furthermore, it will give our local members the opportunity to learn more about our Technical Committees and possibly have future involvement. Our first group of mentors/mentees will be announced after the 2010 winter meeting. If you would like to receive information on how to become part of our local mentorship program, please send me an email to vicepresident@ashrae-cfl.org. You will receive a survey according to your status: professional member or student member. Please, fill this survey and return it to the email above no later than January 30^th, 2010.

Ready, set, Dodgeball! That’s right members our Dodgeball Tournament is just around the corner. Please join the Central Florida ASHRAE Chapter for our 1^st Annual YEA Dodgeball Tournament taking place on Saturday, February 27^th, 2010 at the Frontline Outreach Gymnasium (3000 C.R. Smith Street Orlando, FL 32805). Please arrive promptly; Tournament will begin at 11:00 a.m. Each team will consist of 6 – 10 players; everyone is welcome to sign up for this event. We will have a double elimination tournament, so you will have the opportunity to redeem your team and possibly get to the final game of the day! The registration deadline for this event is January 22^nd, 2010. The cost for this event is $15.00 per player. Lunch and Tournament T-shirt will be given to all participants. YEA Leadership Weekend

October was a great month for Central Florida ASHRAE and its YEA members. During this month, ASHRAE held the YEA Leadership Weekend (YLW) in Atlanta where YEA members from around the world had the opportunity to gather and focus on leadership, networking, and professional development. Central Florida ASHRAE was proud and honored to send one of our current board members to this event. I had the opportunity to catch up with our Central Florida ASHRAE representative and get the insight regarding his experience.

Richard King, P.E. is a Principal and Project Manager for Peninsula Engineering, Inc. He is a Florida native that started college at the University of Florida and transferred to Auburn University. After receiving his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Machine Design Track, he returned to Florida to work in the HVAC Industry. He was nominated to attend YEA Leadership Weekend by Jason Alphonso, our Programs Chair and President-Elect.

Q: What encouraged you to attend YLW?
A: The reasons why I decided to attend YLW were because I wanted to get a better perspective on leadership; I was also the remaining member from the board who had not participated in YLW. Megan, Jason, John, you and I are now YEA graduates.

Q: How was the experience?
A: The most entertaining activity was attending the Atlanta Braves baseball game on Friday night. The most beneficial activity was the “What color are you?” group activity. This activity was very interesting; it taught me about different personality types and leadership styles.

Q: So what color are you?
A: I’m gold, which has nothing to do with the fact that I’m a King, nor do I have any gold. It pertains to my leadership style.

Q: How has YLW impacted your role in our chapter?
A: I want to forge great leadership skills on those who will follow me in succession as President of this Chapter and I want for all of us to achieve another Best Chapter Award in Region XII!

Q: Any advice for future YLW attendees?
A: Be prepared to get to know yourself in a different perspective. It is an awesome experience and you get to meet many wonderful young leaders from around the world.

YEA Events

We had a great first meeting and outstanding attendance for our tech topic session. A total of 15 attendants were present where they had the opportunity to hear from Mr. Jason Alphonso, ASHRAE YEA chair, on the objective and resources that YEA will provide to all of its members. A special welcome to all of our YEA members was given by our very own Richard King, Central Florida ASHRAE President. For October’s tech topic session, Mr. Paul Halyard, President and CEO of Property Condition Assessment, Inc., will share his project experience with our Central Florida YEA members and will be highlight the history of Central Florida’s first centrifugal chiller.

New this year, we are including outdoor and social activities that will give our Central Florida YEA members the opportunity to network with each other and with our professional members. Get ready for Dodgeball!!! Our first Central Florida ASHRAE-YEA tournament will take place on Saturday, February 27^th, 2010. Everyone is welcome to take part of this outdoor activity. We will be following the rules of the National Amateur Dodgeball Association (NADA). Registration and rules will be given out on the November monthly meeting at Dubsdread Historic Banquet Hall. Every team needs to have between six and ten players, so start recruiting your team members and lets have a safe and fun time.

Please join us on Saturday, March 27^th for our first Central Florida YEA Billiards Tournament. This social event will take place at Trick Shots in Waterford Lakes. This will be a single elimination tournament; each team will consist of one Central Florida YEA member and one professional member. Door prizes and souvenirs will be given. Young Engineers in ASHRAE

YEA Leadership Weekend

YEA Leadership Weekend is a society event that gives the opportunity to improve personal and professional development skills of young engineers in ASHRAE and enhance their abilities to serve as leaders in the HVAC industry, professional life, and in ASHRAE. I had the privilege of attending YLW in the month May. The interaction between all the members was outstanding; the group exercises were fun and educating. This leadership program taught me many things, but the most important one is that I am part of a great group of young engineers who are the future of this organization and of the HVAC Engineering community. If you are a young engineer in our Central Florida Chapter, I highly recommend the YEA Leadership Weekend if you are want to be part of the future leaders of this HVAC community and of Central Florida ASHRAE. The next YEA Leadership Weekend will take place at ASHRAE Headquarters in Atlanta on October 2^nd-4^th. Technical Topic Presentations

Please join us on Thursday, September 10^th at Dubsdread Historic Banquet Hall for our YEA Tech Topic Session beginning at 6:20 p.m. This brand new program is a special introduction session for YEA members giving insight to the main speaker’s topic. Jason Alphonso will also discuss the objectives of the YEA Committee and give a special introduction to the “YEA Tech” series. Central Florida ASHRAE President, Rich King, will give a special welcome to all of our YEA members.

Outdoor Activities

Our first Central Florida YEA Dodgeball Tournament will take place on Saturday, February 27^th. Flyers will be distributed soon with all the registration information, rules and location. This will be one of our biggest event for the year!
