Welcome to a new year, ASHRAE Central Florida!

Your Board of Governors has been working overtime preparing an exciting calendar for the upcoming year that will have something for everybody. This year we have chosen technical programs for you that reach out to all aspects of our industry and provide real value to your membership and involvement with the ASHRAE Central Florida Chapter.

We will be starting this year off with a bang by welcoming back former ASHRAE Society President Gordon Holness, PE Mr. Holness will be bringing to life ASHRAE’s new Advanced Building Labeling System also known as Building EQ. ASHRAE is working hard to develop a function scale that can quantitatively grade a building’s performance. The goal of this is to provide additional value to building owners by not only promoting responsible design practices, but also encouraging proper building operation through ongoing commissioning. Additional program information can be found at http://www.buildingeq.com.

In addition to this month’s program, we will be providing value toyou, the Central Florida Chapter member, by providing additional technical presentations covering the validation of building models, business communications, energy analysis, and building envelope & pressurization. Our chapter will also have the opportunity this year to proudly host ASHRAE’s first female president, Lynn Bellenger, PE, coming this May. Lynn will be sharing her presidential theme with our chapter, “Modeling a Sustainable World”.

In addition, the Central Florida chapter will continue to expand upon our successful YEA Tech topics, providing pertinent and useful information to our students and emerging engineers. Our YEA committee chair, Leonardo Rocha, has been assembling speakers that will present on the evening’s main program and demonstrate how to apply the information dispensed during the technical dinner presentation.

I am proud to have the opportunity to serve you this year as an ASHRAE Volunteer and as your chapter’s President-Elect and Programs chair. I look forward to ensuring you receive the most out of your time with us every month and at all of our exciting activities throughout the 2010-2011 year

By, John Miller – President Elect & Programs Chair, 2010-2011

Welcome back to another exciting year for the UCF Initiative. Over the summer, we have been busy making
plans for the 2010-2011 school year to elevate ASHRAE and our industry at UCF. I want to take a few moments and give you all a snapshot of what we plan to accomplish this year.

• The most critical component of our involvement at UCF has always been the students. We have a wonderful student chapter that we will continue to support. One of the ways that we can impact the students, and get them excited about our industry, is to ensure that we maintain a CFC presence at each of the meetings. Our goal is to have 1-2 members at each of the meetings to meet the students and answer the questions they have.
• Every year, ASHRAE funds millions in research dollars to universities around the globe; we want some of those millions to come right here to UCF. We are going to work with UCF and the professors to help identify research opportunities and help bring some of the funding here.
• One of our primary goals has always been to help the MMAE Department develop a HVAC track. We are going to continue to pursue this goal with the development of a curriculum review committee to help evaluate what curriculum
should be used.
• We will continue to work with SA with their community involvement as well as promote the ASHRAE Scholarship to the student chapter. Our plate is full this year however, we are very excited to see what we can accomplish this year.

As your Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) Chair for Central Florida ASHRAE, I welcome you to a new year. For 2010- 2011, the chapter has put together industry tours, tech topic sessions, is continuing our local mentorship program, the 2nd Annual YEA Dodgeball Tournament, and a few surprises. To start, we will have three industry tours of local facilities where our members can have an up close look at a thermal storage, district cooling and central energy plants. Tour dates will begin in November and all our members are welcome to attend. For this year, the tech topic sessions will cover energy modeling cases of buildings and equipment. The tech topic sessions give YEA members an insightful look to the main speaker’s topic and the opportunity to network with the young local professionals from our chapter.

Our mentorship program will continue this year with the recruitment of additional mentors and mentees. This mentorship program creates a professional partnership between a YEA member, whether it be a young engineer, recent graduate, or student and a professional member from our chapter. The experienced professional provides assistance and resources for the transition from college to the work industry (such as interview preparation, career path guidance, professional development, and much more). For this year, we are looking to form five groups (each group consists of one mentor and one mentee).

Every member of this chapter can participate in this program. If you are interested in becoming a mentor or mentee, pleaseforward an email to lrocha@thermal-techinc.com, expressing your interest in this program. An application will be sent to you, complete and return it promptly to the email above. The local chapter membership chair and YEA Chair will contact you with a follow up interview.

By, Leonardo Rocha – YEA Chair, 2010-2011

What a year for Student Activities! Our student members at UCF continue to showcase their talent and dedication on the world stage, taking 1st place in the design category of the 2010 ASHRAE International Design Competition! The winning submission can be downloaded from our website at ashrae-cfl.org. Many thanks go out to the ASHRAE mentors that provided instruction and guidance to our student design teams. We look forward to continuing success from our student members, and furthering our relationship with UCF.

The theme for Student Activities this year is Professional Partnership. We are working with other student professional organizations such as SWE, ASCE, and FES on cooperative agendas to perpetuate interest in engineering and discuss
the common dilemmas we face as an engineering community. We will be partnering with these organizations in service oriented events, including K-12 outreach programs.

After co-chairing Student Activities in 2008-2009, chairing the committee in 09-10, and successfully mentoring the student members of the UCF design team to victory, Anik Patel will be moving up to the new position of chapter Treasurer. KellieWatson will continue to serve as Co-Chair, providing valuable mentoring services to the student members. We are excited to move into the new year and growing our successful student program!

Welcome to the first ASHRAE Central Florida Dewpoint for 2010-2011. The month of August always rings in theNew as another school year opens with renewed vigor after what was a very relaxing summer. This also marks the beginning of what is the new ASHRAE year.

The day I wrote this article two important events took place in the ASHRAE calendar. The first event was the last day of CRC 2010 and the other, the Bill Dillard Appreciation Night. As I look back at both these events, I see two events so entirely different but in the same breath, both so surprisingly similar.

The Bill Dillard Appreciation Night was simply a fantastic tribute to a great ASHRAE guy. A classic toast and roast, 10 of Bill’s close buddies sang his praises, but also grilled the guy to the hilt. What struck me the most was the ASHRAE camaraderie. Four of the ten speakers were Central Florida Past Presidents, with the master of ceremonies (John Elsea) and ASHRAE Society Past President (Gordon Holness) adding to the mix. They all related on a very personal level with ASHRAE as the bonding agent.

This very same camaraderie was so apparent in CRC 2010. The next generation of ASHRAE all worked together, and had fun together, in what made CRC 2010 a huge success. ASHRAE Central Florida came away with a host of awards and topped it off with the BEST CHAPTER 2009-2010 in Region XII. This makes it five years in a row, a truly remarkable achievement for our chapter. I personally left the awards dinner with a renewed commitment to this chapter and all its great VOLUNTEERS.

We have dedicated this year to the VOLUNTEER. We have taken this opportunity to profile two VOLUNTEERS, one of which is a new ASHRAE VOLUNTEER. I would like to thank Megan and Nate for their hard work. Great chapters are driven by great VOLUNTEERS. If you think you would be interested in VOLUNTEERING for ASHRAE, but please drop me an email at president@ ashrae-cfl.org.

Though it was not originally planned such, August 21, 2010 proved to be a historical night for the ASHRAE Central Florida Chapter. The event was a “toast & roast” put on by the chapter, UCF Foundation, the community and few of Bill’s close friends from the industry.

Held at the Orlando Museum of Art, about 100 people joined in celebrating Bill’s contribution to the industry and our community. The ASHRAE dignitaries present were, Gordon Holness, Society Past President, Ross Montgomery, Society VP and Past DRC of Region XII and Bill Malphus, Current DRC of Region XII. Gordon Holness handed Bill ASHRAE’s Exceptional Service Award (ESA). Gordon went on to explain how notable and rare the ESA actually is, saying that in ASHRAE’s membership of 52,000 members worldwide only 65 members have this award.

Ten gentlemen took the stage each toasting the roasting Bill. Of the ten speakers, four were ASHRAE Central Florida Past Presidents – Bernie Horne (94-95), Dewayne Lorenze (82-83), Hugh Wilson (78-79) and Mike Dillard (07-08). Another past president, John Elsea (93-94) was the master of ceremonies. They all had great stories of our chapter’s glorious past.

The other ASHRAE Presidents in attendance were – Firouz Keikavousi (92-93), Michael Sheerin (00-01), Todd Moore (05-06) and Rich King (09-10). I hope you enjoy the pictures of this wonderful evening.
