Why’d You Join ASHRAE?

CRC 2012 in Miami Beach proved to be a great learning experience and a lot of fun, both as an MP person and as an ASHRAE member. I would encourage everyone to attend a regional event at some point, as you learn so much about what other chapters are doing and even some things about your own chapter that you may not have know before. Our region is even more interesting than most, considering it includes chapters from other countries. Learning the characteristics of an ASHRAE chapter in, let’s say, Colombia, was very different from what we are used to here in Central Florida.
CRC was an enlightening weekend! Oh, and did I mention that it is a lot of fun? Yes, it certainly was that!
Included in the CRC schedule is a series of workshops. Not surprisingly, I attended a Membership Promotion workshop led by our MP Regional Vice Chair, Jason Alphonso (from our own chapter). Maybe some of you know him? In that workshop, Jason gave us an exercise that made us stop and consider why we joined ASHRAE and what it has done for us–it really made me think! And as a result, I have many things to include on my list. But I am not going to share them with you. Why? Well because as I thought about it more, it occurred to me to take this exercise a bit further and not just think about me and my ASHRAE world. I thought about the greater benefits of knowing why you joined ASHRAE and what it does for you. And by “you” I mean every member of our Central Florida Chapter.
I would love to hear your story! In fact, I bet we all would.
Would you be willing to tell it?
I do have some ulterior motives here. Doesn’t everybody? So what are they? Well, I have a few goals in mind: (1) To gather information about people in our chapter which we can share through future newsletter articles in order to (2) to get to know each other better, and (3) prepare ourselves as a chapter so that when we talk about ASHRAE to other people. Then we will be readily aware of why we are members, equipped us better to talk about our membership with potential new members. Membership Promotion is something we can (and
should) all participate in.
So please consider this article as my invitation to tell your story. It can be long or short… exciting or dull… old or new… private or public. It’s up to you.
Have a great September!
